5G Coverage Map India — Which Cities Have 5G Now

📅 Mar 5, 20269 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

A colleague in Lucknow messaged us last week: "I bought a 5G phone six months ago and I've never seen the 5G icon once." Meanwhile, someone in Pune is pulling 700 Mbps from their balcony. The 5G rollout in India has been wildly uneven, and the official "5G available in 700+ cities" claims from Jio and Airtel don't tell the real story. Here's what the actual coverage looks like on the ground.

The Big Picture: March 2026

India has two commercial 5G operators: Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Between them, they claim 5G presence in over 1,000 cities and towns. But "presence" and "usable coverage" are very different things.

  • Jio 5G: Active in 700+ cities, dense coverage in roughly 120 cities
  • Airtel 5G: Active in 500+ cities, dense coverage in roughly 85 cities
  • Vi 5G: Still not commercially launched
  • BSNL 5G: Not launched (BSNL is still rolling out 4G)

Tier 1 Cities — Best Coverage

Mumbai

Jio: Excellent — nearly city-wide including suburbs up to Virar/Panvel. Indoor coverage strong in South Mumbai, BKC, Andheri, Powai.

Airtel: Very good — strong in South Mumbai, western suburbs, BKC, Navi Mumbai. Gaps in parts of eastern suburbs.

Delhi NCR

Jio: Strong across Central/South/West Delhi, Noida, parts of Gurgaon. Patchy in East Delhi, Faridabad.

Airtel: Excellent in Gurgaon (Cyber City, Golf Course Road), South Delhi, Noida Sector 62+. Weaker in Old Delhi.

Bangalore

Jio: Good coverage in Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, MG Road, Whitefield central. Gaps in outer Electronic City.

Airtel: Solid in Whitefield, Marathahalli, Outer Ring Road tech corridor. Less consistent in north Bangalore.

Hyderabad

Jio: Wide coverage — HITEC City, Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Secunderabad. One of Jio's best-covered cities.

Airtel: Good in HITEC City and Financial District. Coverage thins out past LB Nagar.

Chennai

Jio: Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, OMR (Tidel Park to Siruseri), Adyar, Mylapore. Surprisingly good in Tambaram.

Airtel: OMR IT corridor and central Chennai well-covered. North Chennai still largely 4G.

Kolkata

Jio: Salt Lake, Park Street, New Town, Howrah station area. Coverage drops significantly beyond EM Bypass.

Airtel: Similar pattern — central Kolkata good, suburbs spotty.

Tier 2 Cities — Good but Patchy

  • Pune: Excellent from both operators. Hinjewadi, Kharadi, SB Road, FC Road, Koregaon Park well-covered.
  • Ahmedabad: SG Highway, CG Road, Prahlad Nagar strong on Jio. Airtel decent in SG Highway area.
  • Jaipur: Tonk Road, Malviya Nagar, C-Scheme covered by Jio. Airtel has limited 5G pockets.
  • Lucknow: Hazratganj, Gomti Nagar on Jio. Airtel very limited.
  • Chandigarh: Surprisingly good coverage from both operators across most sectors.
  • Kochi: MG Road, Edappally, Kakkanad InfoPark area on Jio. Airtel limited.
  • Indore: Vijay Nagar, Palasia on Jio. Airtel starting to expand.
  • Coimbatore: RS Puram, Gandhipuram, Saravanampatti on Jio.
  • Visakhapatnam: Beach Road, MVP Colony, Gajuwaka on Jio.
  • Nagpur: Sitabuldi, Dharampeth, Sadar on Jio. Airtel deploying.

How to Check Your Specific Area

  • Jio: Open the MyJio app and tap "5G Coverage" in the services section. Green areas have 5G.
  • Airtel: Airtel Thanks app, then "Explore 5G Plus" and enter your address or pincode.
  • Ookla 5G Map: Visit speedtest.net/ookla-5g-map for a crowd-sourced global 5G map. Filter by India.

What's Coming Next

Jio has committed to covering every district headquarters by December 2026. Airtel is focusing on deepening coverage in existing cities rather than expanding to new ones — their strategy is quality over quantity. Both approaches are valid, and Airtel's thicker urban coverage often provides a better experience than Jio's wider but thinner rural reach.

BSNL's 4G rollout is ongoing but won't offer 5G anytime soon. Vi is financially struggling and hasn't given a credible 5G timeline.

Bottom line: If you're in a top-10 metro, you'll have usable 5G. If you're in a Tier 2 city, check the coverage maps before buying a 5G phone. And if you're in a smaller town, 5G is likely a year or more away from being practical for daily use.
