How to Check if Your Phone Supports 5G

πŸ“… Mar 6, 2026⏱ 6 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

A reader bought a OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite β€” a phone marketed with "5G" right in the name β€” only to find it wouldn't connect to Jio's 5G network. The reason? It supported n78 (Airtel's band) but not n28 (Jio's 700 MHz band). Let's clear this up.

Why "5G Phone" Doesn't Always Mean "Works on Indian 5G"

5G operates on different frequency bands worldwide. India primarily uses:

  • n28 (700 MHz): Jio's primary 5G band β€” excellent indoor coverage
  • n78 (3500 MHz): Used by both Jio and Airtel β€” faster speeds, shorter range
  • n258 (26 GHz mmWave): Used in select areas β€” extreme speed, very short range
  • n1 (2100 MHz): Airtel uses for 5G via dynamic spectrum sharing

A phone sold in Europe might support n78 but not n28. A phone made for the US might support n77 (close to n78 but not identical). Result: your "5G phone" shows only 4G in India.

Method 1: Check Phone Settings (Android)

  1. Open Settings then About Phone
  2. Tap SIM Status or Network
  3. Look for Mobile Network Type β€” if it says "NR" or "5G NR," you're on 5G right now
  4. Go to Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Preferred Network Type
  5. If you see "5G/4G/3G/2G" as an option, your phone hardware supports 5G

On Samsung phones, go to Settings, Connections, Mobile Networks, Network Mode. If "5G" appears in the list, you're set.

Method 2: Check Phone Settings (iPhone)

  1. Go to Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data Options, Voice and Data
  2. If you see "5G On," "5G Auto," or "LTE" options β€” your iPhone supports 5G
  3. If you only see "LTE" and "3G," your iPhone doesn't have 5G

All iPhones from iPhone 12 onwards support 5G in India, including bands n28 and n78.

Method 3: Dial a Code

On Android, dial *#*#4636#*#* to open the testing menu. Under "Phone Information," look at "Set Preferred Network Type." If NR (New Radio) options appear, your phone has 5G hardware.

Method 4: Check the Band List Online

The most reliable method. Look up your exact phone model on gsmarena.com or kimovil.com. Check the "Network" section for 5G bands. You need at minimum:

  • n78 β€” essential for both Jio and Airtel 5G
  • n28 β€” needed for Jio's wide-coverage 5G band

My Phone Shows 5G in Settings But Never Connects

Three common reasons:

  • No 5G coverage in your area: Check operator coverage maps
  • Software update needed: Some phones need a carrier update. Check for system updates.
  • SIM card issue: Older 4G SIM cards sometimes need replacement. Visit your operator's store for a free 5G-compatible SIM swap.

If you bought an Indian-market phone from a major brand after 2023 and it was advertised as 5G, it almost certainly works. Problems arise with imported phones and grey market devices. When in doubt, check gsmarena.com for your exact model number β€” it takes 30 seconds.
