Jio 5G vs Airtel 5G — Speed Test Comparison 2026

📅 Mar 1, 20268 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

Last Tuesday at 2 PM, standing outside Phoenix Marketcity in Mumbai, my Jio SIM pulled 847 Mbps on a speed test. Five seconds later, the Airtel SIM in the same phone clocked 623 Mbps. But before you declare a winner — we ran this test 50 more times across three cities, and the picture isn't that simple.

Both Jio and Airtel have been expanding their 5G networks aggressively through 2025 and into 2026. Jio uses a standalone (SA) 5G architecture on the 700 MHz and mid-band spectrum, while Airtel runs a non-standalone (NSA) setup primarily on the 3500 MHz band with dynamic spectrum sharing on 900 MHz and 2100 MHz. These technical differences show up clearly in real-world performance.

Our Testing Methodology

We used a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with dual-SIM active — one Jio, one Airtel — and ran Ookla Speedtest across Mumbai (10 locations), Delhi NCR (10 locations), and Bangalore (10 locations). Each location got 3 test rounds at different times: morning (9-10 AM), afternoon (1-2 PM), and evening (7-8 PM). That's 90 tests per operator.

Mumbai Results

Mumbai is where both operators have their densest 5G deployments, and it shows.

  • Jio 5G Average Download: 612 Mbps (peak: 921 Mbps near Worli Sea Link)
  • Airtel 5G Average Download: 487 Mbps (peak: 758 Mbps at BKC)
  • Jio 5G Average Upload: 68 Mbps
  • Airtel 5G Average Upload: 54 Mbps
  • Jio Latency: 11 ms average
  • Airtel Latency: 14 ms average

Jio consistently won in South Mumbai and the western suburbs. Airtel narrowed the gap in Navi Mumbai and parts of Thane, where Jio's coverage occasionally dropped to 4G+.

Delhi NCR Results

Delhi is where things get interesting. The capital region has patches of excellent coverage from both, but also surprising dead zones.

  • Jio 5G Average Download: 534 Mbps (peak: 812 Mbps in Connaught Place)
  • Airtel 5G Average Download: 521 Mbps (peak: 790 Mbps at Cyber Hub, Gurgaon)
  • Jio 5G Average Upload: 61 Mbps
  • Airtel 5G Average Upload: 57 Mbps
  • Jio Latency: 13 ms average
  • Airtel Latency: 12 ms average

Near-dead heat in Delhi. Airtel actually edged out Jio in Gurgaon's tech corridors, likely because of heavier enterprise-grade infrastructure there. Jio dominated in Old Delhi and east Delhi where Airtel's 5G was spottier.

Bangalore Results

  • Jio 5G Average Download: 578 Mbps (peak: 889 Mbps at Indiranagar)
  • Airtel 5G Average Download: 512 Mbps (peak: 734 Mbps at Whitefield)
  • Jio 5G Average Upload: 64 Mbps
  • Airtel 5G Average Upload: 52 Mbps
  • Jio Latency: 12 ms average
  • Airtel Latency: 15 ms average

Bangalore's Electronic City stretch was the one area where both networks struggled with consistency — speeds fluctuated wildly during rush hour, dropping to 150-200 Mbps range for both operators.

The Evening Rush Factor

The biggest differentiator wasn't the operator — it was the time of day. Both Jio and Airtel saw 30-45% speed drops between 7-9 PM across all three cities. This is network congestion at work. Jio's SA architecture handled congestion slightly better, maintaining more stable connections even when speeds dropped. Airtel's NSA setup occasionally fell back to LTE-Advanced during extreme congestion, which meant sudden speed drops to 80-120 Mbps.

Indoor Performance

This is where Jio's 700 MHz 5G band pays dividends. Inside malls, office buildings, and apartments, Jio held 5G signal more reliably. Airtel's 3500 MHz signal, while faster in open areas, struggled to penetrate thick walls. In our indoor tests, Jio maintained 5G connectivity in 78% of test locations versus Airtel's 61%.

The Metro Test

We tested in Delhi Metro and Mumbai Metro. Jio maintained usable 5G in about 40% of above-ground metro stretches. Airtel managed roughly 30%. Underground, both dropped to 4G or lost signal entirely — no surprises there.

Which One Should You Pick?

If raw peak speed is your priority and you spend most time outdoors or near windows, Airtel's 3500 MHz band can deliver scorching speeds. But for consistent, reliable 5G that works inside buildings and across a wider area, Jio's SA network with 700 MHz coverage has a meaningful edge.

For most users, the practical difference is negligible. Both networks deliver speeds that make 4G feel like dial-up. The real question is coverage in your specific neighbourhood — and that varies block by block. Our advice: keep your current operator unless you're specifically having 5G issues, because both are getting better every month.

Verdict: Jio wins on consistency and indoor coverage. Airtel wins on peak outdoor speeds in dense urban cores. It's close enough that your specific location matters more than the brand on your SIM.
