Jio AirFiber vs Airtel Xstream — Home Internet Compared

📅 Mar 7, 20268 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

My neighbour got Jio AirFiber installed last month — no drilling, no cables, just a box on the windowsill. He's getting 120 Mbps for ₹899/month. I've been paying ₹999 for Airtel Xstream Fiber (wired) and getting 300 Mbps. On paper, I'm winning. In practice? It's more complicated than that.

What Are These Products?

Jio AirFiber is a fixed wireless access (FWA) device. It connects to Jio's 5G network and converts that into Wi-Fi for your home. No cables run to your house — just a device you plug into power near a window.

Airtel Xstream comes in two flavours: the traditional Xstream Fiber (wired FTTH) and the newer Xstream AirFiber (also fixed wireless). We'll compare both.

Plans and Pricing

Jio AirFiber Plans (March 2026)

  • ₹599/month: 30 Mbps unlimited
  • ₹899/month: 100 Mbps unlimited — most popular plan
  • ₹1,199/month: 300 Mbps unlimited
  • ₹1,499/month: 500 Mbps unlimited
  • Installation: Free device on 6-month commitment

Airtel Xstream Fiber Plans

  • ₹799/month: 100 Mbps unlimited + Xstream Play
  • ₹999/month: 200 Mbps unlimited + Disney+ Hotstar
  • ₹1,499/month: 300 Mbps unlimited + full OTT bundle
  • Installation: ₹1,500 one-time (often waived on annual plans)

Airtel Xstream AirFiber Plans

  • ₹799/month: Up to 100 Mbps
  • ₹1,099/month: Up to 200 Mbps
  • ₹1,499/month: Up to 300 Mbps

Speed: Real-World Numbers

We tested across a 3BHK apartment in Mumbai (Andheri West) over two weeks:

  • Jio AirFiber (₹899 plan, 100 Mbps): Average 92 Mbps download, 31 Mbps upload. Dipped to 45 Mbps during evenings (8-10 PM).
  • Airtel Xstream Fiber (₹999, 200 Mbps): Average 187 Mbps download, 178 Mbps upload. Never dropped below 160 Mbps.
  • Airtel Xstream AirFiber (₹799, 100 Mbps): Average 78 Mbps download. Similar evening dips to Jio AirFiber.

Installation Experience

Jio AirFiber: Ordered online, device arrived in 2 days. Plugged in, connected to app, done. Total setup: 15 minutes. No drilling, no technician visit.

Airtel Xstream Fiber: Scheduled installation took 5 days. Technician drilled a hole for the fiber cable. Professional but messy — not ideal for rented apartments.

Airtel Xstream AirFiber: Similar to Jio — device delivered, self-install.

Reliability and Latency

  • Jio AirFiber latency: 18-35 ms (varies with congestion)
  • Airtel Fiber latency: 3-5 ms (rock solid)
  • Airtel AirFiber latency: 20-40 ms

For video calls and streaming, wireless is fine. For competitive online gaming, the latency difference is noticeable. Fiber wins for gamers.

Wireless also suffers during heavy rain. We noticed 40-50% speed drops during Mumbai's heavier showers. Fiber was unaffected.

Who Should Pick What

Pick Jio AirFiber if: You rent your home, need quick setup, don't game competitively, and live in a Jio 5G-strong area.

Pick Airtel Xstream Fiber if: You own your home, want maximum speed consistency, game online, or run a home office where reliability matters.

Pick Airtel Xstream AirFiber if: Same reasons as Jio AirFiber, but you prefer Airtel's network or OTT bundle.

Avoid wireless home internet if: You're in an area with poor 5G signal, live on a ground floor blocked by buildings, or need sub-10ms latency.
